The mission of La Escuelita Arcoiris is to serve young people and their families through a culturally diverse, creative, child-focused learning environment.
We provide pedagogical excellence through dynamic, child-centered learning programs using the principles and philosophy of Emergent Curriculum. By providing authentic and diverse educational and cultural experiences, La Escuelita Arcoiris is Pittsburgh's best and most creative early childhood language immersion program.
La Escuelita Arcoiris began in September of 1999 in the home of founder, Megan Rooney. Her goal was to share with her community the benefits of second-language learning at an early age. She began with five children in addition to her own and has grown the program to be a six-classroom school involving over 60 families comprised of a toddler class, preschool, kindergarten, after school programs and summer camp.
Through its mission and core programs, La Escuelita Arcoiris provides the greater Pittsburgh community with a unique and important educational and cultural resource that improves and enhances the lives of young children.
This year we commemorate our 18th anniversary serving the community and defining the landscape in Pittsburgh!
"My goal is to offer a preschool environment that helps children develop a passion for language, culture and ultimately, learning itself. If our students leave Escuelita with an openness to new people and the skills to engage and participate in their community, then my teachers and I have done our job well."
- Megan Rooney, Director of Education & Founder
We are a team of passionate and diverse professionals, who work to serve our familias and the community at large. We teach and guide our students’ education mindful of our objective that every student ‘graduate’ from Escuelita with a fostered sense of openness, awareness, and respect for other cultures, which they will bring to their own experiences and adventures.
We are curious, playful, energetic, investigative, hands-on, colorful, diverse, and inclusive.
Here are academic terms and theories that we subscribe to, and are passionate about integrating within the classroom every day.

Olga Gonzalez, one of our Colibri teachers, shares what 'Somos Escuelita' means to her.
We are a community, and the work we do here is inspired by that. At La Escuelita, people who come from different countries and cultures work together with mutual trust, respect, and tolerance for each other.
